Who’s to say?

Enter the Anthropocene
and our age of technology.

Who’s to say that this is the best use of the mind,
that modern civilization and its technology represent progress,
that learning to build industrial machinery was not just another
arbitrary electrochemical accident in the evolution of life on earth,
and the cyclical narrative of human history?

I’m sure there is another way, one that steps outside of the cycle
and welcomes a complete psychic shift because, really,
just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.
So, how else can we utilize body and mind and voice,
and will we?

We are so fragile, so temporary.
Earth tilts on its axis, and there is winter;
a shift in degrees, and a climate crisis.

My feet are cold this morning, but that’s good.
Feet on the ground, head in the clouds.
Is there any other way to be?
