Softness

Here’s an experiment you can try at home.

Fix your eyes on an object in the distance
(I’m looking at holiday lights across the room).
Keep your eyes open, resist the urge to blink.
What happens?

My eyes water and sting.
My vision blurs and-
in spite of the discomfort-
softens the world’s edges in
a new, cathartic way;
the distance and difference
between me and the lights
turns to mist.

Seeing with softness;
is it that easy?
